RECYCLING AND WASTE REDUCTION
Mount Pleasant residents are GREAT recyclers and have some of the highest participation numbers in the County. However, because the State of South Carolina has target numbers for reducing the amount of garbage and trash that is being sent to landfills, all Towns may face future challenges to develop additional ways to reduce collection tonnage. Below are a few ways that you can continue to reduce, reuse, and recycle!
CHRISTMAS TREES
Christmas Trees may be placed curbside with your regular trash. The trees, along with your yard debris, are recycled by the Town at the County Landfill. The County turns this debris into compost for resale. The SC Department of Natural Resourses will also collect trees for fish habitat creation. Please check with that agency for more details.
HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE
Charleston County Recycling provides this service. Recycling drop off locations and curbside pick-up information are available by calling 720-7111. Drop off locations for certain items are located throughout Mount Pleasant.
COMPACT FLOURESCENT LIGHTBULB (CFL) DISPOSAL
At Home Depot stores, customers can simply bring in any expired, unbroken CFL and give it to the store associate at returns desk. The bulbs will then be managed responsibly by an environmental management company that will coordinate CFL packaging, transportation and recycling to maximize safety and ensure environmental compliance.

PROPER DISPOSAL - PRESCRIPTION DRUGS
The State Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC) has issued new guidelines regarding the proper disposal of prescription drugs. In an effort to prevent water pollution, prescriptions should not be flushed down the toilet. When the drugs get to the sewer treatment plant they cannot (yet) be filtered out. After the plant cleans the waste, the water is discharged out into the ocean - the prescription drugs are flushed out as well. Scientists are finding high levels of drugs in the water and in marine animals. Click here to link to SCDHEC's website and information flyer.

WASTE REDUCTION
DONATE IT – the Kidney Foundation, Goodwill, Habitat for Hummanity and other organizations will collect or accept many used items, and some organizations provide a tax-deductible receipt.
Items donated to organizations for re-use helps reduce the size of our landfills and lessen the need for new landfills.
