The Facilities and Grounds Division consists of 52 Personnel that are structured into two different service teams. These teams are directed by the Facilities and Grounds Division Chief, three Foremen, and a Turf Specialist. The “Facilities Team” is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of Town infrastructure. The “Grounds Team” performs the landscaping and upkeep of Town recreation complex fields, streetscape along area roads, and landscaping of Town facilities and parks. These staff members are the “behind the scenes” crews who make our Town a pleasant place to live! As the Town motto is “Cresco” or “we grow” – it certainly applies to the grass, shrubs and trees around the Town.

Areas of concern can be reported to the Public Services Department’s administrative office at 849-2022. All calls will be evaluated for maintenance needs.

Facilities Team – Buildings Maintenance Crews
Four crew members perform the repairs to and installation of basic building fixtures. With over 16 Town facilities, including Town Hall, Fire Stations, Alhambra Hall, Jones Center, Park West, Patriots Point, numerous smaller ball fields, and other infrastructure to maintain, these crews stay busy. Their job includes replacing light bulbs, painting walls, changing fixtures, building concessions stands, keeping playgrounds safe, and other “routine” upkeep of town facilities. While they do not handle large maintenance items such as pool and air conditioning maintenance, they put their hands in many projects around the Town, including special events such as Children’s Day, Blessing of the Fleet, and the Christmas Parade!

Facilities Team – Custodial Crews
Ten crew members are responsible for the custodial upkeep of all Town Buildings. Individuals are assigned responsibility for the cleaning needs of specific Town facilities. Several of the crew members manage multiple smaller facilities. The cleaning and support needs of the Town keep our custodial staff very busy. Their jobs are not just about keeping bathrooms and offices clean but also about supporting Committee and Council Meetings with special set-ups, overseeing rental events at Alhambra Hall, preparing Town gymnasiums for Sock hops, municipal elections, swim meets and many other tournaments and activities that take place at Town facilities. These crew members take great pride in their work and it shows!

Grounds Team – Landscape Crews
Seventeen crew members tend to the landscaping needs of Town facilities. Trees and shrubs continue to multiply in public areas all over Town. The new park on Whipple Road, including the recently created wildlife area at the stormwater pond on Longpoint Road, and the Palm Trees on Coleman Boulevard are examples of public spaces that are maintained by these landscape crews. In addition, they maintain the grounds of town buildings such as Alhambra Hall, Town Hall, Jones Center and Park West. In an effort to reduce maintenance needs, the Town is planting more and more local species and utilizing special design techniques to reduce long-term maintenance requirements. The Park West recreation facility uses a special type of landscaping design, called xeriscaping, to reduce the watering needs of the plants. By planting wisely, we can become more efficient in our tasks while maintaining the natural beauty of the Low Country.

Grounds Team – Athletic Field Crews
Ten crew members, who form the athletic field crews, maintain a busy schedule. Mount Pleasant is the recipient of several awards for excellence in recreation programs and hosts many regional tournaments. Our residents are fortunate to have many incredible recreational facilities located throughout the Town. In our department, we take pride in the fact that our facilities play a key role in being able to offer support to these excellent programs. The crews maintain baseball, softball, soccer, football, and track facilities. They prepare the fields and play surfaces daily for team practice and tournaments. Because of our wonderful climate, soccer and baseball have practically become 12-month sports, which keeps these crews very busy year round.

Grounds Team – Right-of-way Crews
Eleven crew members comprise the team that is responsible for mowing, weed-eating, and controlling weeds as well as pruning, and planting new trees in right-of-way areas throughout the Town. Primary corridors such as Coleman Boulevard, Mathis Ferry Road, and Highway 17 are serviced on a weekly and monthly basis. Smaller roadways such as Center Street and Rifle Range Road are serviced as needed. While the Town does not maintain all roads in the Town (some are County, State or privately owned or maintained), The Public Service Committee of Council has authorized the department to maintain certain roadways on a revolving schedule.
