MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (September 3, 2004) – Mount Pleasant Mayor Harry M. Hallman, Jr. held an emergency press conference at Town Hall yesterday to discuss details regarding a contract signed by town officials with a debris contracting firm. As of now, the Public Services Department has issued the following statement:
- Town crews and contractors are working 10-12 hour days to collect yard debris only.
- These crews will be working Labor Day weekend – Saturday, Sunday and Monday to collect yard debris.
- We have divided the Town into in several debris collection zones. All zones are being worked at the same time. We will be collecting all the yard debris from one subdivision in a zone before beginning the next.
- We cannot collect other trash – carpet, old furniture, construction debris, and other manmade items at this time. We will announce when this collection will be resumed – please remove these items from the curb until collection resumes.
- Garbage collection (brown container) will continue – we will be on a holiday schedule next week Monday will be collected on Tuesday, Tuesday on Wednesday.
- Garbage cans need to be at the street curb by 7 AM on the day of collection.
- Tree contractors are required to haul off the debris that they cut, if we see contractor generated debris being placed on the street it will be flagged as a non-collect pile.
- DO NOT place any debris on top of utilities (cable, phone, electrical, or storm drain boxes).
- Please do not block you mail box with the debris.
- Please try not to block the roadways with debris piles, emergency vehicles may need to enter and exit your area.
- Please drive carefully and slowly in areas with large debris piles.
- Please do not dump any debris into storm drains or ditches this will cause flooding.
- Please help by sweeping up loose debris from the road in front of your house and bagging the debris for collection.
- If you need to report damages that occur during collections to the Planning Department at 884-1229.
- Report drainage problems to the Stormwater Office at 856-2157.
We realize that residents still have trees down in their yards and on their homes. If we have collected your area already, we will be returning to repeat the collections once all areas have received an initial collection.
Thank you for your patience, understanding, and assistance as we undertake this massive clean up effort!
(And thanks to our crews and staff working long hours to make it all happen!)
