Young sailors invited to register for 5th Annual Mount Pleasant Junior Regatta

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (July 15, 2009) – The Mount Pleasant Recreation Department would like to invite all interested young sailors ages 18 and under to participate in the 5th Annual Mount Pleasant Junior Regatta set for Saturday, August 8. Pre-registration is due August 5.

Beginning at 9 a.m. at Hobcaw Yacht Club in Mount Pleasant, young sailors will board their boats to sail around the harbor for an official regatta. The event is co-sponsored by the Town of Mount Pleasant and the Hobcaw Yacht Club and presented by Charleston Yachting.

“This regatta encourages participation from youth who have little racing experience but basic boat-handling skills,” said Mount Pleasant Recreation Department program coordinator and event organizer Tina Carter. “We also encourage experienced young sailors to participate. This is a great opportunity for new sailors to get out on the water and compete in an environment that’s fun and lighthearted.”

Participants do not need to own a boat to enter and may contact Tina Carter prior to the event to use a boat for the competition. Registration forms are available at any Mount Pleasant Recreation Department facility or online at www.townofmountpleasant.com. Pre-registration is $15 and will be available through August 5. Sailors can pre-register at any Mount Pleasant Recreation Department facility or by mailing in the registration form before the deadline. On-site registration will take place the day of the event from 9 – 11 a.m. for $20. Participants with a U.S. Sailing number will receive a $5 discount on registration.

A skippers’ meeting will begin at 11 a.m., races will commence at 12:30 p.m. and awards will be presented at the end of the day, with first, second and third-place prizes awarded in each class division.
