MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (December 3, 2008) –
Mayor Harry M. Hallman Jr. will proclaim “Arbor Day” at the Holiday Farmers Market and Craft Show on Dec. 13, and will urge residents to assume responsible roles for preserving, protecting and planting trees.

“I invite children and adults to attend the Mount Pleasant Holiday Farmers Market and Craft Show to learn about the quality of life and the environmental issues that preserving trees bring to our town,” he said. “On Dec. 13, Arbor Day activities will include hands-on projects for children, the potting of trees and seedling giveaways. Celebrate Arbor Day in a personal way at the Holiday Farmers Market by potting a tree and taking it home! It is an act of optimism and kindness, a labor of love and a commitment to environmental stewardship.”

“J. Sterling Morton founded Arbor Day more than a century ago. His simple idea of setting aside a special day for tree planting is now more important than ever. Trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water, cut heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce life-giving oxygen, and provide habitat for wildlife," said Site Planner Eddie Bernard. "Trees are a renewable resource giving us paper, wood for our homes, fuels for our fires, beauty for our community, and most importantly a source of joy and spiritual renewal.”

The first Arbor Day was celebrated in the State of Nebraska in 1872 in response to a state proclamation urging settlers and homesteaders in that prairie state to plant trees that would provide shade, shelter, fruit, fuel, and beauty for residents of the treeless plains. Today, South Carolina and the Town of Mount Pleasant celebrate Arbor Day in the early days of December.
“Discover the Mount Pleasant Holiday Farmers Market and Craft Show this holiday season, get a head start on you holiday shopping, and bring home a live tree seedling!” concluded Bernard.
